This week’s Inspired Mom is Kimberly L. Holloway, born and raised in Memphis, TN. Her work ethic is off the chain. If she wants something, she gets it. She has worked hard to get where she’s at today and being a mom to a vivacious 2-year old is the icing on the cake.

“I’ve had two failed pregnancies and after years of trying, I feel like I finally got what I’ve wanted. I’m embracing my motherhood journey because I always try to live without regrets. I’ve lived and done a lot. Now it’s all about her.”

Talk about living without regrets. Earlier this year, Kim walked away from a full-time position she had for over 10 years in order to pursue being a momprenuer full-time. Check out one of her business ventures here at Boss Crafter Design & Supplies.

“I’ve been working since I was 12. My first job was at a fireworks stand selling fireworks in Mississippi. I never liked being told no so I’ve always been willing to work to get what I want.”

And guess what ya’ll? Kim is a perfect example of how you can still experience success in life without being an A+ student or attending college right out of high school.

Many of us grew up being told a college degree was a necessity. However, with the number of people dissatisfied with the disparity between their college degree, income level and student loan debt, the push towards attending college after high school as the key to success is finally softening.

“I barely passed high school. But it wasn’t because I wasn’t smart. I just spent most of my time working during my high school years to get things I wanted. I think it’s part of the Memphis mentality…get money. And that’s what I did.”

Kim also grew up in a household where it was 18 and out. After graduation, she stumbled upon the military and was all for it, especially since she didn’t want to attend college. Years later, Kim eventually obtained her bachelor’s degree, but the military gladly enlisted her after high school.

“The military provided me with housing, a job and benefits. I was first stationed in Okinawa, Japan in 2000 and met some of the best people in my life.”

Kim credit’s the military with her ability to strategize with ease. She is also self-taught in many areas of her life. From her knowledge of logistics, computer systems and project management, to her ability to effectively execute a plan, she’s learned it all on her own.

Kim also acknowledges the impact her own mother has had on her personal drive to make things happen. Kim’s mom used to make her write papers in the summer time on what she did everyday. Any time she wanted something, she also had to write a business plan for it.

As much as she hated having to write essays and business plans as a kid, she admits it was great preparation for her adult life.

So here’s some nuggets of inspiration I heard from this Mom Boss as we dined at a local Memphis restaurant.

When women have children, there’s a switch…and it’s called I’m not taking your shit anymore. The filters come off.

My motherhood switch is on.

I’m that mom who will pay for a babysitter to come to my home so I can get some sleep.

Having a support system is amazing, even if it’s not coming from the places you may have expected the help to come from. You have to be okay with that and accept people where they are in life.

Putting my child first is how I stay balanced as an entrepreneur. I make sure to have a cut off time each day.
